                                      Americans All and Covid-19

The stress that Covid-19 has placed on families that suddenly had a loved one taken from them—plus the lack of proper closure or a way to permanently honor and preserve their loved one’s memory—must be addressed as soon as possible. These loved ones are more than just occasional media “sound-bites” or statistical entrires. Their legacies must be record and preserved, not as a “Memorial,” but as a “Celebration of Their Life,” complete with text, photographs and if available audio and/orvisuals. The creation process can also play a major role in helping families heal, and this is not a task that the federal or state and local governments can do.

An ancient proverb tells us, “When a person dies, it is like a library has been destroyed.” Normally, if someone is ill or approaching a “ripe old age,” there is time to minimize the loss. When death is sudden, the individual is deprived of an opportunity to directly pass on his or her accumulated knowledge, wisdom and experiences to current and future generations. Without this information, children will not have gained this information or, in many cases, fully understand or appreciate the background behind their roots, ethnicity and cultural identity.

Genealogy experts have cautioned us that stories passed on orally will fade in two generations. The solution? Americans All, a program of the 35-year-old People of America Foundation. Without deviating from our mission, Americans All has repurposed its storytelling component to meet this need. Membership is free to individuals, families, schools and nonprofits, and our templates and accompanying tutorials simplify the creation and preservation process.

Storytelling is not new, but our unique version has never been used to share the experiences and contributions of everyday people or to unite a nation!
