An Inexpensive Membership Benefit for Non-Public School Students and Staff
When the emphasis in many schools shifted to STEM topics, support for history and civics declined. Therefore, we must do as much as possible now to ensure schools and teachers have access to state-approved, grade-level-specific social studies resources and professional development opportunities to enhance classroom instruction. A social studies education develops critical-thinking skills, and it teaches students how to evaluate different perspectives, assess the validity of evidence, work in groups and apply facts in decision-making. We cannot allow this important discipline to be diminished.
Legacy stories acknowledge that heritage and culture are rich aspects of personal and group identity. Producing a legacy story can be a wonderful intergenerational bonding experience for a student and his or her immediate or extended family. For the same reasons an individual creates a will and an estate plan, he or she can create, publish and enjoy a legacy story now—or save it, update it for free and publish it at a later date. Legacy stories:
- Allow an individual to control how he or she is remembered.
- Celebrate his or her memories, experiences and accomplishments.
- Help pass on wisdom and lessons learned to guide future generations.
- Ensure the significance of a lifetime will not be lost forever or, in the case of an unexpected event, wind up as an impersonal, costly and short-lived newspaper obituary.
This is where our 31-year-old, nonprofit foundation's Americans All program comes in. We invests more than half of our membership fees to provide inclusive social studies resources to help K–12 students succeed in our democracy, economy and workforce and appreciate our nation’s long-standing values of diversity, tolerance and inclusion. Our one-time, tax-deductible membership fee is $49. However, as a School Legacy Partner, the cost for students and staff is only $24.50.*

The point of contact manages the school’s account. After a school becomes a Legacy Partner, it receives a 5-digit coupon code to create and publish a legacy story on the school for free; the story is housed forever on our Web site and the home pages of Legacy Partner Alliance members.
